Meditation and Mindfulness on TV, Film and the Web
Television appears to have had a significant role in the relocation of meditation from a traditional Buddhist spiritual practice to a modern wellbeing technology. Popular science TV programmes began introducing the general public to the health potential of meditation during the 1970s. Several years before the introduction of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) in 1979.
The first step in this endeavour is to collect information about the depiction of meditation on TV in the decade before mindfulness was first used. To help explore the changing way that meditation was perceived how TV programmes were instrumental in altering those perceptions. To begin I’m going to simply list a few of my initial finds here, adding to the page on an ad-hoc basis.
