PhD Mental Health Continues To Decline – Thinking Solutions
Join the Global PhD Meditation Project to enhance mental health and build a supportive community for PhD candidates worldwide.
Peer-reviewed studies over the last decade continue to demonstrate serious problems with PhD mental health. A Mindtraining organisation, PhD Thriving, has developed a strategy to support PhDs and ECRs worldwide through regular meditation sessions.
The Global PhD Meditation Project plans to offer high-quality secular meditation classes to PhD candidates worldwide, free at the point of delivery. PhD Thriving’s ambitious vision for the Global Group will begin with a pilot in the Spring Term of 2027 to test the concept. If the pilot succeeds, the full project will begin in Autumn 2027. The project will scale through a controlled development programme, raising funds from institutional partners, mental health organisations, educational charities, and individual donations. Although the group will be largely online, the project also includes in-person groups running in parallel.
The project’s architect, Dr Stephen Gene Morris, an experienced meditation teacher, researcher, and meditation scientist, will initially direct it. He has developed a nondual compassion meditation specifically for an international online academic context.
If the project reaches a critical mass, Dr Morris has also committed to establishing a programme to teach volunteers how to lead nondual meditation groups to support the sustainability and independence of the concept.
The Global PhD Meditation Project is the most exciting meditation initiative I have been involved with. Currently, PhD mental health is at a crossroads, with mental health at historically low levels. This meditation project isn’t a complete answer, but it could provide free support to thousands of PhD candidates and Early Career Researchers worldwide.
The project will build an international meditation community specifically for postgraduates. We welcome support from students, institutions and other stakeholders. Please get in touch if you’d like to learn more about this landmark project, sign up for the initial pilot, or support it in any way.
Stephen
